Our Parish

Dear Friends,

It had been 16 years since I was sent here to be your pastor.  That is 832 Sunday bulletins.  There was not a pastor’s message in all of them, but it was my weekly homework and I tried to write something of interest. Today sadly, I write my last message to you as your pastor due to my retirement.  Next week we will welcome with open arms our new pastor – Fr. Michael Evans.

I give thanks to God and all of you for giving me a home since July 1, 2001.  With the exception of my childhood home, I have never called anywhere home as long as I have called St. Bernardine’s home. Parishes are amazing the way they welcome their priests and from my first day here I have felt your warmth.

An extraordinary blessing of St. Bernardine’s was becoming pastor here following the enormous work that Monsignor Murray and Monsignor Dotson had done.  Not only had they built a faith community but also such a perfect Church and other beautiful buildings.

One of the incredible gifts for a priest is to share in some of the most important moments of peoples lives.  You privileged me with all those weddings, funerals, first communions, anointings and confessions.  You even listened to my rambling sermons every Sunday and you never failed to compliment and encourage me.  You invited me to your houses for dinner and treated me to golf games and gifts at Christmas.  You trusted me to listen when your hearts were broken and you let me pray with you for healing.  You let me wait with you when your loved ones were dying as we talked about our faith in the eternal life Jesus promised.

As I look back, I am particularly grateful to God for the parish staff throughout the years.  Many were here before I came and will continue to serve our new pastor.  Their talents were a very important asset to me in my ministry. Truly, I would have been useless without them.  I was also blessed with amazing volunteers whose love of God and their church kept the parish so alive.

Therefore, with a heart full of gratitude, I retire.  Spending time with Fr. Leslie in Ireland, who has a terminal heart condition is important to me.  As well as that,  Father Michael will need the space to get his feet on the ground.  Until we see each other again then, may the good Lord hold you in the palm of his hand.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Much Love and Blessings,
Father McNamara
